Social Events - August Recap

Thank you to all of the members who have volunteered their time this summer to make the pool a better place! During August, pool member Leslie Dougherty researched and taught two different Paint by the Pool Classes – one for adults and one for children. Thank you Leslie for sharing your time and talent with us!

A huge shout of thanks out to Cape Ace Hardware and the dynamic duo of Debs Miller and Becky Mesarch for teaching the kids how to make a folder and pencil case at the August's Duct Tape Workshop. We so appreciate all of your time and enthusiasm teaching three Duct Tape Workshops at the pool this summer! When you visit Cape Ace Hardware, please thank them and let them know how much you enjoyed the classes!

Kids Night was also held in August and the kids had a blast! Thank you to the folks who volunteered their time cooking at the grill, serving food and chaperoning the event: Karen Fedor, Heather O’Neil, Diane Doyen, Aaron West, Tisha and Keith Donahue. Special thanks to Heather O’Neil who inflated all of the beach balls for the event!

Much thanks to Scott Brunner for repairing the tether ball for the kids, and to Madon for tilling the sand on the volleyball court!

Swim Team Recap

The swim team completed its regular season July 31 and the Dolphins had a successful summer swim season. The swimmers had fun and there were a lot of improvements. We celebrated July 31st at the swim team banquet to close out our season.
  • The team had 116 participants.
  • Our record was 2 wins and 2 loss in our division.
  • We had swimmers participate in all 3 championship meets.
  • New Team Records – Congratulations to swimmers Tori Fulton who set records for the 15-18 50 Back and 50 Fly and Wyatt Hicks who set the record for the 6&U 25 Free.
  • Thank you to Katherine Woods for another wonderful season. We appreciate all your hard work co-managing the team, great job!
  • Thank you to Head Coach Kristen Watson, Assistant Coach Cailin Mazan, Assistant Coach Emma McGrady and Assistant Coach Genevieve Madden for all their expertise, kindness and patience.
  • Thank you to Coach Helpers Emma Edwards and Ryan McNeal. The swimmers enjoy working with the coach helpers. The tradition is a wonderful way to build team unity.

Swim Lessons Recap

The Cape St. Claire Swim Club has offered summer swim lessons to the community for over 20 years at a reasonable price in a convenient location. With no more than six students to an instructor, every child gets the attention they need. The lessons are grouped by ability at an evaluation. The lessons are taught by experienced instructors and coaches with assistance from members of our swim team. All of our instructors have years of swimming experience!
  • Four sessions of swim lessons, serving 51 children, many swimmers took multiple sessions.
  • Many positive comments about the quality of the swim lesson program.
  • Thank you to all our instructors and assistants.

Water Aerobics and Masters Swim Recap

We were unable to find a water aerobics instructor this season, as our original instructor has an unexpected change of plans just before the start of the season. Aquatics will continue to search for an instructor for the 2017 season.

In its second season, the Masters swim program had 9 dedicated participants. Coached by Max Madden, swimmers averaged 3000 yards per practice. Participants worked on a variety of several things such as increasing yardage and stroke technique. Practices were varied and swimmers could request specific work. 2016 Masters Swimmer Achievements:
  • Yvonne did a flip turn after not having done one for over a decade.
  • Colleen learned competitive strokes for the first time, competition legal freestyle and backstroke, and the stroke basics of both Fly and Breast.
  • Katie Scott, Laura, Joy, Tracy, and Colleen were training for a triathlon, but Colleen and Laura had back and wrist injuries unrelated to the program that prevented them from participating in the triathlon itself.
Great job swimmers!! We hope to build upon and continue the program next year with the same format of coached practices customized to participants and an open lap lane. Reviews from those who participated have been enthusiastically positive.

See you next year!

The 2016 season ends at 8 pm on September 11, and we'll see you again on Memorial Day Weekend 2017! The Board of Governors will be working hard until then, so please let them know your thoughts, comments, and concerns to make the pool the safe, fun, and enjoyable place that it is. You can write to the Board anytime by email at 'board@capepool.com'.

President's Remarks

We made it through another winter and it’s time to put that behind us with another wonderful fun filled summer at the Cape St. Claire Swim Club nestled in our little oasis in the Cape. The sclub this year has programs such as: swim lessons, swim team, and Masters swimming, volleyball and great social events for all ages; read about the details in this Waterlog.

The board and member voluteers too numerous to name have being working since last season to: improve the facility with renewed bathrooms, swings, parking lot stone just to name a few.

Every year at the end of the season we hold elections for new board members, if as a member you think you would be interested in running for the board, now would be a great time to work with one of our committees lending a hand and getting familar with what needs to be done. If you are interested in helping out please drop me or another board member a note by email.

And anyone can send me an email (president@capepool.com) if you have anything whatsoever on your mind.

From Buildings & Grounds

We're off and running! A few stumbles aside -- the caulk didn't form the proper seal between the new toilets and the new flooring in the bathrooms -- we're really happy with the upgrades! The plumbing has worked flawlessly so far (knock on wood) and guards have reported the bathrooms to be remarkably easier to maintain, especially at the end of the night.

In the next week, we'll apply MasterSeal NP 1 to form a proper seal between the flooring and the toilets. One of the downfalls of the old flooring was the ability for water to seep between the toilets and the floor and rust out the phalanges.Master NP 1 is a one-component, high performance, non-priming, gun-grade, elastomeric polyurethane sealant. It requires no mixing and typically requires no priming to bond to many materials, including concrete and masonry.

If you're a contractor, you understand all of that. For the rest of us, it's caulk we would never use in our own homes, so when it's applied, an alert will be be made on the site and our social media pages so you know if the bathroom is closed. We're hopeful we can apply before close and be ready to use the facilities the next morning.

We're also thrilled to see some grass up on the hill. With some real growth, we're hopeful the annual run-off of silt from the hill into the pool has been slowed, and hopefully stopped for good. Finally, as you might have noticed, the pavilion is looking a little worse for the wear. Rest assured, it's next on the list of repair and overhaul for buildings and grounds.

As always, I'm eager to hear what the membership would like to see, so contact me at 25cameron@gmail.com with your comments or suggestions.

Regards, T.C. Cameron, Building and Grounds Chair

From Buildings & Grounds

We hosted our first Clean-Up Day of the 2016 season April 30! Believe it or not, the season is right around the corner, and we're excited about the updates we've made for you to our fair facility. We'll host one more Clean-Up Day May 14 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Remember, a free guest pass is your reward for giving your pool two hours of elbow grease. We'd love to see you there!

In other news, with the bathroom overhaul completed, we're moving on to addressing the hilltop play area above the pool deck where the swings are located. We've built rings around eight trees and layered those rings with mulch to address strengthening the largest and most vulnerable timbers on the property. Of course, this doesn't guarantee us any results, but by being proactive, we hope to minimize the risk of them falling during Maryland's famously strong wind storms in the spring and summer months, which ebbs into hurricane season.

Finally, we're busy building up the berm where the large boulders are located in an effort to stop or minimize the runoff of dirt into the pool, which occurs chronically and annually. Again, by addressing these concerns more aggressively, we're making the hilltop a better and safer place for kids to visit and play, and beautifying the property, too.

As always, I'm eager to hear what the membership would like to see, so contact me at 25cameron@gmail.com with your comments or suggestions.

Regards, T.C. Cameron, Building and Grounds Chair

Welcome to 2016

Welcome to the 2016 season of the Cape St. Claire Swim Club! We have lots of news to share, so please keep on reading below. Be sure to get your dues paid if you have not yet done so. And then get ready for opening day on Saturday, May 28.

From the President

Spring has sprung and summer is on its way which means it’s time to sign up your kids for the swim team! Swim team registration opened April 1 and is filling quickly. The team is a lot of fun; it’s a great way to make and keep friends at the club, to stay fit over the long hot summer, and is a good reason to get up in the morning! Every practice is challenging and fun; we have team breakfasts on Fridays, an awards banquet and we swim in five dual meets – each one is like a party!

The Cape St. Claire Dolphins Swim Team is a competitive swimming program that teaches the principles of teamwork and good sportsmanship, promotes a love for the sport, and advances aquatic skills. The children receive endurance training, stroke refinement instruction and improve significantly over the season. For more information and to register visit www.capedolphins.org

For those of you planning a fete at the pool this summer please be aware of the new procedure: The club will no longer charge a cleaning deposit for parties however if you cause damage or leave a mess behind you will have place your membership in jeopardy.

There has been some good work done over the winter – the bathrooms are sparkling with fresh new paint and floors – new toilets are coming soon. Just in time for Spring Clean Up! I hope you will save the dates and join us for one or both of the clean-up days at the pool on April 30 and May 14. Note: Good work will be rewarded with free guest passes.

Annual Clean-Up Days

The Cape Pool's Annual Clean-Up Days are on April 30 and May 14, both from 8 am until 2 pm. See the next section for details. If you can spare some time, please stop by and help. Every family that helps out will get a free guest pass!

From Buildings & Grounds

The gates locked and the sounds of last summer long ago ebbed into a busy off-season at our pool. During winter’s slumber, we worked hard to make some improvements for you!

First, we updated the bathrooms with some industrial-grade hardware in both showers and the rinse-off station, too. That took place in late October. The days of pulling a rope are over!

Second, we gave the Guard Shack and the bathrooms two fresh coats of contractor-grade, exterior-based, mildew-resistant white paint. That project was finished in November before the cold weather arrived. Bright and fresh!

Finally, in the early part of March, our Guard Shack and bathrooms received an awesome new flooring system. Finished in blue and white speckle, there is now a true and even grit – a real slip-resistant finish! – to our floors. Best of all, our guards we will be able to rinse and sweep our floors clean on a daily basis with ease.

Noticeably absent is the dark hue, and the space looks fresh and re-energized. We are hopeful the upgrades make everyone happy and excited about using the pool in 2016.

Because of this work, we have dedicated the Guard Shack – the front office next to the sign-in table – for our lifeguards as a place to store their items, have a chair to sit on during break and take cover during storms.

In past seasons, this space overloaded with clutter and other non-essential items. Our guards are an essential part of the pool experience. They safeguard our children – nothing is more important – and oversee daily operations of the facility. More often than not, they are young adults who live in and around Broadneck Peninsula. If it takes a village to raise a child (and run the pool), giving them a place to call their own is a big part of our culture of improvement this off-season.

Finally, we have removed a handful of trees from the property and we have contracted to have rings cut around some of the bigger trees to ensure they stand tall and healthy. Before the facility opens to the membership for the season, we will be doing a major overhaul of the pump house, eliminating outdated items and moving some less essential operational items into this space. We have two Clean-Up Days scheduled this spring! Come join us and remember, a two-hour stint earns you a free guest pass for the 2016 season.

On Saturday, April 30, we will host the first round of clean up from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The second day, scheduled for Saturday, May 14, also from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., is our final call before Opening Day.

As we approach Opening Day – it will be here before we know it, right? – we’ll begin drafting a Master Guidance Plan for the website as it relates to what we’ve accomplished so far and what we’re planning to do in the upcoming off-season!

We are always mindful of making the experience of bond ownership better than it was the year before, and we are dedicated to making the pool an outstanding value to our membership! See you soon!
