From the President

The 2014 summer swimming season is over, leaving behind some great memories and new friendships. Over the long winter months the CSCSC Board will work to make 2015 just as wonderful and maybe even better. If you would like to become involved with any of the active committees such as beautification, grounds, or social events please contact the respective chairs for those committees. August

From the Vice President

Be sure to attend the Annual Membership Meeting on August 24. Your input is important. Please utilize the feedback form available at the pool or online to communicate your thoughts, concerns, or kudos to the Board.

Thank you all for some wonderful years. It has been a great experience learning to run a pool facility. I hope you all have enjoyed your summers at Cape Pool. I am sure the current and new board members will continue to offer excellent service and hire wonderful management companies. It's been a pleasure getting to know the members and see the kids grow. Next year at this time my family and I will be starting our new adventures on the Coast of Ecuador. Best of luck to you all.

Pia Wingblade

Annual Membership Meeting

The end of the season is almost upon us, and that means it is time for the Annual Meeting of the pool membership. This is YOUR pool, and this meeting is where YOU get to hear about pool operations, ask board members questions, and help to chart to future of the pool. The meeting will start at 4 pm on Sunday, August 24 at the pool pavilion. We need at least 25 members (bond owners…people leasing may attend, but not vote) in attendance to conduct club business. If you cannot attend, please sign a proxy vote (http://www.capepool.com/Proxy.htm) and give it to someone who will be there to vote in your place. You must appoint someone to vote for you, and have them bring the proxy to the meeting for you.

In case of rain, the annual meeting will move to Monday, August 25, 2014, 7 pm at the pool pavilion.
Pool Board Candidate Bios

One of the items at the Annual Membership Meeting is to elect new members to the Board of Governors. Below are bios submitted by interested candidates to date in no particular order. If you are interested in serving on the pool board, nominations are accepted from the floor at the annual meeting, and self-nominating is normal and acceptable (just be ready to tell a little about yourself.)

Kevin Byrne
I along with my family (wife and four children) have lived in Cape St Claire for the last six years. We have enjoyed being a part of Cape Pool and our children have been a part of the swim team. I am active duty military working in the Navy acquisition community. I would like to continue to serving on the board after stepping in as a board member over the last month. I believe serving on the board, I can make positive contributions to Cape pool.

Craig Madden
I have enjoyed serving on the CSCSC Board for the last several years working with other dedicated volunteers to improve the facility and to expand on its use by members. I feel we have accomplished a lot in the last few years and that I have been an integral part of making the pool a happy place. There are still many improvements we can make and so I would like to continue to serve on the CSCSC Board and work towards continued improvement.

Tracy Millward-Bourne
My name is Tracy Millward-Bourne and my family and I have lived in the Cape for more than 7 years. Due to a funny story associated with our last name, we have been members of the pool for the same length of time. I have a BS in Early Childhood Education and have been an educator in both the public and private sector for many years.

I have volunteered for many organizations including Girl Scouts, My Brother’s Pantry, and Friends of Lake Claire. Our girls have been members of Cape St. Claire Dolphins Swim Team, and our entire family is involved with keeping the pool beautiful and enjoyable through participation in Clean Up Day, Social Events, and Horticulture and Beautification of the pool. We look forward to many more years as pool members, and I would like to do my part to ensure that all pool members and their guests have a great experience when they visit our “hidden treasure.”

Kari Maltz
Hello my name is Kari Maltz. I have been a resident of Cape St. Claire for 12 years and, along with my husband, Ron, and children, Erik and Elizabeth, enjoy the benefit of having a great swim club right in our neighborhood. We have been members since 2006. Erik has participated on the Cape swim team for three years and Elizabeth will join next summer. The pool and the swim team have served as a great focal point to bring our family closer together. I enjoy serving on the CSCSC board and would welcome the opportunity to continue for another term. As Secretary and Social Chair this past year I have had the great pleasure to get to know many of our pool members and their families, and understand how this great neighborhood amenity serves to bring so many families together in a positive way.

Joe Keckler
My name is Joe Keckler. I have lived in the Cape since 2003 and been a pool member since 2006. Prior to moving here, I was stationed throughout the country as a soldier in the US Army. I currently work at the Naval Academy as an HR Supervisor. I have three beautiful children and a wonderful wife who are very supportive in all my endeavors.

I served as a board member the past few years and brought my knowledge of electrical, plumbing, communication (electrical equipment) and put it to good use. Even though much has been accomplished, there is much more I would like to accomplish if given an opportunity to continue my service on the board.

Thank you for your consideration and I hope to continue serving the pool community.

Katie Hicks
Cape St. Claire has been my home for my entire life. As a child, my family owned a bond to the pool where I spent many hours swimming and racing on the swim team. It only felt natural for our family to join so my children could enjoy the same wholesome, fun times I had experienced. I have two wonderful boys, Tyler (8) & Wyatt (4). They both enjoy spending time enjoying the friendships they’ve established and the amenities offered at our family oriented swim club. Tyler currently swims on the swim team and Wyatt will join him next year.

Being a high school teacher at Severna Park High School allows me plenty of time off in the summer to devote to our swim club. This summer, I headed the Beautification Committee where we weeded, planted new flowers, and added three Cyprus trees so hopefully in a few years they will block the back of the stores.

I look forward to spending more time keeping Cape Pool the family oriented swim club I’ve come to know and love.

Karen West
I recently learned of the vacancies on the Pool Board and am interested in applying for one of the positions. We have lived in Cape St. Claire for over ten years and are members and volunteers in many organizations based in the community. Currently, we are members of the Goshen Farm Preservation Society, the Goshen Farm Sharing Garden and the Cape St Claire Garden Club. During the school year, I volunteer weekly in the Media Center, as well as for various fundraising activities at Cape St. Claire Elementary. When my children were younger, I was the Cape Tots Coordinator for two years, which involved scheduling play groups and activities for toddlers and preschoolers on a weekly basis.

I am committed to supporting the community in positive ways. Although our family has only joined the pool last fall, we visit the pool almost every day. My daughter, Olivia, has been a member of the swim team for the last two seasons and my son, Kyle, has participated in swim lessons for the last two summers. We love that the pool is so conveniently located, that our children always have friends to play with, as well as the friendly life guards and neighbors we encounter on every visit. This past summer, I served on the Social Committee of the Pool, and really enjoyed it. I would welcome the opportunity to serve on the Pool Board.

Thank you for your consideration.

T.C. Cameron
In support of my candidacy for a spot on the board of the Cape St. Claire pool, please afford me an opportunity to tell you a bit about myself.

I'm a reporter and copy editor for Tribune Media Group, parent company of the Annapolis Capital, Baltimore Sun and Carroll County Times. I'm also a three-sport collegiate referee/umpire, working football, basketball and baseball. I have three kids enrolled in Anne Arundel Co. Public Schools.

My interest in the board is to serve and improve upon an already great experience myself and my family has enjoyed as bond owners since 2010.

Beautification and Horticulture Committee

The beautification of the pool is off to a great start thanks to Tom Payne, Anne Hatcher, Christine Clark, Craig Madden, Martha Fiedler, Marie Pickett and Mike Hicks. They have volunteered their time weeding and planting and because of their efforts, our swim club is more visually appealing. Any member who notices a wilting plant is encouraged to take a moment and provide that plant with some water; together we can keep these plants thriving.

Suggestions to help make our swim club more visually appealing are always welcomed. Please email the committee with your ideas at nicepool@capepool.com . Thank you!

Annual Clean-Up Day

The Cape Pool's Annual Clean-Up day is this Saturday, May 3! We need your help to get the pool ready for opening day (and to keep our operating costs - meaning your fees - down). If you can spare some time, please stop by anytime starting at 8 am. Every family that helps out will get a free guest pass! If it rains, we'll do the clean up on May 17 - but the weather is looking good now.

We will have some tools on hand, but if you have any that you can bring, it will certainly help make short work of our projects. We could use garden tools (trowels, hedge trimmers, rakes, etc) and perhaps general work tools (just to have extras on hand). Don't forget to wear "work clothes"...you will get dirty (or maybe even painted).

Leasing Your Membership for 2014

There are still Cape residents looking to lease a membership! If you are a member and are interested in leasing your membership for the 2014 season, please review the leasing information on the Club's Membership page). If you have any questions about the process after reviewing the website, please send an email to membership@capepool.com.

Water Aerobics

The fabulous Tara DeLeon will again teach Water Aerobics classes every Monday and Wednesday beginning on June 23. The classes are provided at no charge for any members who may wish to participate. There is no need to sign up, just show up ready for a great work out. Sponsored guests are also welcome. Guests must be accompanied by their sponsor and all guests fees apply.

Opening Day & Membership Cards

The pool opens for the season on Saturday, May 24! Membership cards for 2014 will be available opening weekend. Please stop by to pick up the cards for your family, even if you don't plan stay at the pool. We'll have people around just to help distribute cards, and it will only take a few minutes (if that).

Guest & Babysitter Cards

Guest passes can be purchased (checks only - no cash) at the pool once we open. Passes are purchased in groups of seven ($21 total). We can keep your guest card at the guard table, but we are not responsible for them. They do not expire, but you must collect them at the end of the season. Any guest cards at the guard table at the end of the season will be discarded.

Babysitter cards can be purchased at any time. A babysitter card is $35 before May 1st and $50 on or after May 1st. If you didn't pay for a babysitter card when you paid your annual dues and would like one, please send a check to the Club and write "Babysitter card" on the memo line. We'll make sure that a babysitter card is with your family's cards when you pick them opening weekend.

April

President's Welcome

Former President Kristie Alva has stepped down due to a move. We thank her for her years of service to the swim club and its membership and wish her well. She will be missed.

In March, I was elected to the board to serve out the remainder of Kristie’s term as president and Kari Maltz was elected to the board and will serve as the Secretary. We welcome Kari and look forward to working with her to keep a happy pool.

During the off season the long lost well was located and found underneath a substantial Leyland Cypress – who put that there? The tree was removed and the well repaired and extended up out of the ground and chlorinated. The grounds have been cleared of leaves and additional work will be done before opening to keep the pool up to snuff.

DRD has done a great job over the past two seasons and will continue as our management company for the 2014 season.

I hope everyone is looking forward to summer fun as much as my family and I are. Please come out for clean-up days in May.

Craig Madden

From the Vice President

Cape Pool is gearing up for another great summer. After this brutal winter we deserve some fun in the sun!

DRD will manage our pool once again this year. Anyone aged 16 or older who would like to be a lifeguard should apply though DRD on the web at DRDpools.com.

We need your help in the many jobs that need doing, especially as the season gets underway. In order to have the best Club possible please consider volunteering some time to beautification or social events.

I would like to remind everyone to share the rules with family members and guests. We love to have guests invited to the pool but keep in mind there are rules governing number of guests, cost, and age sponsorship. We also require swim tests for kids under 16 every year. Even if your child took the test last year, they must retake it this year unless they have aged out.

Looking forward to a great summer!

Pia Wingblade
