End of the Swim Season

This is our final weekend of the 2013 swim season! The pool will close for the year at 9 pm on Labor Day Monday. This will also be the last newsletter until the spring, but look for pool updates on the web and Facebook pages. Thanks for a great year!

From the President

It is hard to believe that summer is coming to an end and the pool will be closing on Monday! We hope that you all enjoyed this season at the pool and can enjoy our last weekend as well.

We held the annual meeting on Sunday, 8/25 and had a good turnout. Each committee gave their season-end report and we elected new board members as well. I am pleased to announce that Mike Meer, Cheryl Gorman, and Bill Macauley will be joining the CSCSC board in addition to our re-elected incumbents Bob Baca and Kristy Larsen. I would like to thank Christine Byrne, Shane Clark, and Kari Maltz for their service on the board. Finally, we decided that the pool will become a non-smoking area next year, with the exception of a designated smoking area. This area will be determined by the board in the next couple of months and sent out to the membership. This area will not be on the pool deck.

Thanks again for a great season and see you next year!
Kristie Alva

From the Vice President

Thank you everyone for another great season at Cape Pool! I think our guards did a fantastic job this year...most were first year guards. After a few weeks of On-the-Job training, I think the kids molded into their jobs nicely. From the sounds of it, we all liked DRD and look forward to having them back to manage next year. With that, we are also hoping that most of our guards will return for another season at Cape Pool.

If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at vp@capepool.com. Next year, if anyone is interested in lifeguarding, please email me in February or March to let me know and I will confirm where to apply.

Stay Warm, Happy Winter
Pia Wingblade

Don't forget to pick up your guest cards before the pool closes. Guest cards do not expire, but you must pick them up at the end of summer if you want to use them next year. The pool is not responsible for damaged or lost guest cards that remain after we close on Monday night.

The end of the season is almost upon us, and that means it is time for the Annual Meeting of the pool membership. This is YOUR pool, and this meeting is where YOU get to hear about pool operations, ask board members questions, and help to chart to future of the pool. If you cannot attend, please sign a proxy (http://www.capepool.com/Proxy.htm) and give it to someone who will be there to vote in your place. Among other items, we will be electing board member to two-year terms. Look for bios of those seeking to serve on the Board of Governors in the near future. If you decided to run for a board position just before coming the the Annaul Meeting, that's fine...self-nominations are welcome from the floor at the meeting.

July

From the Vice President

We are about midway through the pool season, time sure flies. I just want to remind everyone that the lifeguards are not baby sitters. Every parent or chaperon is still responsible for their child or children. If you hear a "Walk!" or a whistle blow, please be sure that it is not one of your kids being reminded of the rules. Let's keep the pool safe and accident free! Also, remind your kids that the tether ball is not a swing. Sitting on the ball and swinging on the rope could result in a head injury or broken bone.

Another reminder, as we have seen some storms roll through this summer: When there is thunder we clear the pool for 30 minutes...every time there is a rumble, the timer re-sets to 30 minutes. If there is lightening, for everyone's safety PLEASE clear the pool deck as quickly as possible. You must leave the grounds and stay in your cars since it is not safe to stay under the pavilion or trees. Remember, the guards cannot seek shelter until the deck is clear. (Please observe this guideline during swim meets too.)

I would like to thank the guards for their work this summer. Thanks guys!
Pia Wingblade

Guest Cards

Guest cards are available for purchase from the lifeguards. They are $21 and are good for 7 guests. If you would like to purchase a guest card, please bring a check payable to CSC Swim Club (no cash) and let one of the guards know that you'd like to buy a guest card. Remember, guest cards do not expire but they must be picked up at the end of summer if you want to use them next summer.

Swim Team

We have had three meets so far and our record is 3 – 0. The kids are having a great time. Several swimmers have broken pool records this season!

Please come out to cheer for the Cape St. Claire Dolphins at our last home meet, Saturday, July 13 - Annapolis Swim Team vs. Cape. The pool will be closed until 1 pm to general swimming.

Water Aerobics

Water Aerobics started last week and got off to a great start. No experience required, free to members. If interested, please join Tara on Monday and Wednesday nights from 5:45 – 6:45 pm.

From the Vice President

The season has finally started, although the Memorial Day Weekend was a bit on the chilly side, we did have a few members show up to swim and enjoy the pool deck. This week has seen an improvement with temperatures and the pool has been getting some use.

Our management company this year is DRD Pools and we are staffed with kids from the neighborhood. Our manager, also a swim team coach, is Cody Edwards. Our assistant manager is Sam Meaux and our guards are Matthew, RJ, Katie, Jordan, Zion, Skyler, and Andy. We have a great staff this year but please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Please read the rules and make family members aware of them. They are in place to keep pool users safe and the facility in compliance with health department regulations. A child who is NOT toilet trained may NOT use the main pool. Swim diapers must be used on non-toilet trained children in the baby pool. Every year we seem to have an accident that closes the main pool for a minimum of 8 hours. This is a health department regulation and our lifeguards must adhere to it.

If a lifeguard tells you NOT to do something, do not ignore him or her. They tell you to keep you and others safe. NO running means NO running. Multiple times of telling the same kid not to run will result in a time out and walking laps around the pool deck. Ignoring a lifeguard's order can result in loss of pool privileges for the remainder of the day, several days, or in extreme cases permanently.

Put these dates on your calendars and swim under the stars - The pool will be open till 11 PM on July 27th and August 17th (no parties after 9).
Enjoy the summer,
Pia Wingblade

Membership Cards

Several of you have yet to pick up your membership cards. Please check in at the guard table and sign for your cards. Replacement cards are $10 each, so keep your family's cards in a safe location when you are away from the pool. Guest passes can be purchased at the guard table (checks only - no cash) in groups of seven ($21 total). We can keep your guest card at the guard table, but we are not responsible for them. They do not expire, but you must collect them at the end of the season. Any guest cards at the guard table at the end of the season will be discarded.

Swim Team

Swim team concluded registration in mid-April with 114 swimmers including those in the precompetitive program. 72% of the team is made up of members or lessees.

We are very pleased with our coaching staff this season – Returning to coach the Dolphins are Head Coach, Kristin Watson, Coaches Max Madden and Cody Edwards and Coach Helper Nick Howard. In addition we have four new Coach Helpers who are as enthusiastic and hard working as the rest of the staff. We welcome to the coaching team Emma Edwards, Genevieve Madden, Cailin Mazan and Ryan McNeal.

Please come out to cheer for the Cape St. Claire Dolphins at one of our upcoming home meets:
  • Wednesday, June 26 - Harting Farm vs. Cape – pool closes at 4:30 pm
  • Saturday, June 29 - Mayo vs. Cape – pool closed until 1:00 pm
  • Saturday, July 13 - Annapolis Swim Team vs. Cape – pool closed until 1 pm

President's Welcome

Welcome back to the Cape Pool! The pool opens in just a few short weeks and we are looking forward to a great summer. Cards will be available to pick up beginning Saturday, May 25th, but please be patient as there will be many people picking up cards over Memorial Day Weekend.

From the Vice President

We are finally in the home stretch, at the end of the month the pool season will finally be upon us. Our new management company, DRD Pools, has been hard at work getting the pool ready. By the time Clean-Up Day arrives, we should have a new (working) shallow end light. The new ADA Chair lift should be installed as well. I know several local kids have applied for lifeguard positions and DRD has been busy training them. Congratulations to those who secured positions and have successfully completed their training. We look forward to a fun and hopefully sunny summer.

Gardeners - for clean-up day I plan to have plants, planters, and dirt ready to go. I will also have bags of mulch for the flower beds. Come on out and help make our pool area a beautiful place to be this summer. Bring some rakes, shovels, and whatever else you use for gardening.

Painters - Our buildings are in need of a new coat of paint and the trim needs attention too. Paint and supplies will be on hand, so wear your paint clothes and be prepared to spruce up our Pool Buildings (this project is not suitable for children).

Looking forward to a great summer,
Pia Wingblade

Annual Clean-Up Day

The Cape Pool's Annual Clean-Up day is this Saturday, May 11! We need your help to get the pool ready for opening day (and to keep our operating costs - meaning your fees - down). If you can spare some time, please stop by anytime starting at 7 am. We'll be cooking up burgers and hot dogs, and every family that helps out will get a free guest pass! If it rains, we'll do the clean up on May 18 - but check our homepage or Facebook page for any cancellation information first. Right now, the weather looks good enough to at least do the cleaning, planting, and general set-up.

We will have some tools on hand, but if you have any that you can bring, it will certainly help make short work of our projects. We could use garden tools (trowels, hedge trimmers, rakes, etc) and perhaps general work tools (just to have extras on hand). Don't forget to wear "work clothes"...you will get dirty (or maybe even painted).

We'll have food and drinks on hand, and every family that helps out will earn a free guest pass.

Membership Cards

Membership cards will be available opening weekend at the pool. Please check in at the guard table and sign for your cards. Replacement cards are $10 each, so keep your family's cards in a safe location when you are away from the pool.

Guest & Babystitter Cards

If you purchased a guest or babysitter card during the registration process, the card will be waiting for you when the pool opens. When you pick up your membership cards, you can also pick up your guest or sitter card.

Guest passes can be purchased (checks only - no cash) at the pool once we open. Passes are purchased in groups of seven ($21 total). We can keep your guest card at the guard table, but we are not responsible for them. They do not expire, but you must collect them at the end of the season. Any guest cards at the guard table at the end of the season will be discarded.

Babysitter cards can be purchased at any time. A babysitter card is $50. If you didn't pay for a babysitter card when you paid your annual dues and would like one, please send a check to the Club and write "Babysitter card" on the memo line. We'll make sure that a babysitter card is with your family's cards when you pick them opening weekend.

April

President's Welcome

Are you ready for the 2013 pool season? I know we are more than ready around my house! Opening weekend is not far away ... Saturday, May 25th is fast approaching. I am pleased to announce that we have changed pool management companies and DRD will be managing the pool this summer. You can expect more to come in upcoming issues of the Waterlog about DRD and our lifeguards.

Once again, dues were available to be paid through our online system and this has made the process streamlined and easier for everyone.

We have done some work over the winter to remove dead trees and clean those that we are keeping. We will also be fixing the light in the pool.

We still need your help! Please consider joining us on our Clean-Up Day Saturday May 11th from 7-? (rain date May 18th). Pitching in on pool beautification helps to keep our dues costs down, and helps to make our environment as lovely and enjoyable as possible. Each family that volunteers gets a guest pass and this year we will be grilling burgers & hot dogs for those that help out.

Check our website calendar to keep informed on Swim Team, Volleyball, and Social events this year!

As your President, and on behalf of the board, I just want to say how excited I am that summer is almost here, which means warmer weather and fun days at the pool. If there's anything we can do to improve your experience with us, please let me know.

Kristie Alva

From the Vice President

Summer is fast approaching and we have been busy getting the pool ready for the summer. Some work has been done on the septic system...not fun or noticeable but necessary. Also, we are having the shallow end light fixed, hopefully once and for all so we can see during late night swim and movie night this year.

Our management company this year will be DRD Pools, located in the Glen Burnie area. It looks like we will mostly have local guards assigned to our location this summer. So far it has been a pleasure working with these folks. Please keep in mind that rules need to be followed. The guards are there to keep everyone safe, not to babysit, so make sure your kids are aware of the rules and follow them. I would hate to see anyone get a time-out for constantly breaking rules.

I am not sure what direction plants will take this year. Hopefully I can find more hibiscus for the pool deck. My plan is to bring plants, soil and planters to the Clean Up Day, so if you're a gardener please think about volunteering some of your time. We are also hoping to replace the baby pool shade awning with something more substantial this year. The building and grounds guys are still trying to find a solution.

I hope to see many of you in May for clean up day - it's not just work, it's a celebration....Getting Ready for Summer (and the first BBQ at the pool this season:-)
