From the Vice-President

Well the season has come to a close. The guards were packing up the chairs and loungers as I left them tonight. The pool will be winterized and the cover put in place within the next few weeks :( We had a great season...no accidents other than some minor boo-boos. Thank you all for a great season. Nikola and Tomas really enjoyed working at the Cape this summer. They were very impressed with how well the kids listen. We have earned ourselves a reputation at High Sierra as a great pool to work at...kudos to the kids and their wonderful parents :)

If you have any comments or suggestions for next year we would love to hear from you. Please utilize the feedback page at the Cape Pool website.

Have a great winter...see ya 'round the Cape.

Pia Wingblade
Vice President

Keep Your Contact Info Current

It's important to keep your information up-to-date - even when the pool is closed. If you move or change your email address, go to www.capepool.org and click "Update Your Family Information" or email your changes to membership@capepool.com. Address and email changes are important to us, as we send mailings and emails with information about annual dues.

If you leased a membership this summer, keep in mind that this does not guarantee that you can lease again next summer. The Club has 20 leases available each year, and these are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If you want to lease for the 2013 season, look for an email in late January 2013 with information on to lease a membership for the summer. Alternatively, you can find a current member who is interested in leasing to your family for the 2013 season.

Social News

We had a bunch of fun at the pool in August, with two special events. On August 16th, we had Margarita Night for adult members, and on August 20th there was Teen Night for our members ages 13 -18 years old.

On a hot Thursday evening, about thirty members stopped by the pool for a few free margaritas and some chips and salsa. A number of members also brought along their favorite Mexican munchies to share. It was a festive atmosphere with lots of good chatting all around.

Despite a downpour of rain, Teen Night was highly successful. Forty four teens met at the pool for an evening of fun. Evan Lash provided the musical entertainment, kids munched on make-your-own-burritos, and a few tried their talents at karaoke. Thanks to all the moms who donated toppings, desserts, and their time that evening. Also, a special thanks to Katherine Woods for the great idea and the yummy food.

To wrap up the season, we had the Third Annual Chili Cook-off on Monday, September 3rd. Ten members submitted their personal interpretation of chili for judging by about 37 members who were delighted to help. All the different chilies were delicious! After the official votes were counted, though, Brian Moss’ chili was judged to be the best of the day. Dan and Deanna Tobin came in second place.

Nikki Charlson and I (Betsy Jackson) want to thank all the members for a great summer at the pool. We’ll see you next year!

Annual Meeting

The end of the season is almost upon us, and that means it is time for the Annual Meeting of the pool membership. This is YOUR pool, and this meeting is where YOU get to hear about pool operations, ask board members questions, and help to chart to future of the pool. The meeting will start at 4 pm on Sunday, August 26 at the pool pavilion. We need at least 25 members (bond owners…people leasing may attend, but not vote) in attendance to conduct club business. If you cannot attend, please sign a proxy (http://www.capepool.com/Proxy.htm) and give it to someone who will be there to vote in your place. Among other items, we will be electing board member to two-year terms. Bios of those seeking to serve on the Board of Governors, in alphabetical order, are:

I look forward to the opportunity of serving on the board for another term.

  • Janet Ascione
My name is Janet Ascione and my family and I have been cape residents since 2004. I have two children, Gabriella and Domenic that are students at Cape St. Claire Elementary. Gabriella has been a member of the Cape Dolphins swim team for the last two summers and we have just recently purchased a pool membership. My husband, Matt, is active duty Air Force and is a Broadneck High School alumnus. We thoroughly enjoy being members of the pool and I look forward to being part of the pool committee and meeting new capers!

  • Nikki Charlson
Nikki is finishing up her first term on the CSCSC Board of Governors and currently serves as Membership Chair. She also assists with the Club's social activities and previously with the swim team. Nikki, her husband Deane, and daughter Isabelle have been members of the pool for four years. She looks forward to continuing the membership duties and working to create enjoyable summer memories for the Club's members.

  • Shane Clark
My wife, Christine, and I have enjoyed living in Cape St. Claire since 2001. We have been members of the pool for four years with our children Gabe, Jack and Alex with 2 out of 3 kids active on Swim Team and hopes of 3 of 3 next summer! My goal would be working with Joe Keckler to continue the development of the pool as a great place to spend summers. When I am not poolside, I spend my free time practicing SUP (stand up paddle boarding). I look forward to working and meeting with other Capers!

  • Angela Glass
My name is Angela Glass and I have lived in Cape St Claire since 1997. I grew up in Revell Downs so I spent much of my childhood in Cape St Claire with lots of friends of who's friendships I still maintain today. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 14 years and have two beautiful daughters, ages 12 and 8. I am currently enrolled at University of Maryland University College to obtain a Master's Degree in CyberSecurity. We leased at Cape Pool for one summer and then recently acquired a bond and are now permanent members. As a member of the Board, I hope to help make suggestions and be part of how we can better utilize our pool, and make it a fun and safe environment for our pool members.

  • Joe Keckler
My name is Joe Keckler. I have lived in the Cape since 2003 and been a pool member since 2006. Prior to moving here, I was stationed throughout the country as a soldier in the US Army. I currently work at the Naval Academy as an HR Supervisor. I have three beautiful children and a wonderful wife who are very supportive in all my endeavors. I served as a board member this past year and brought my knowledge of electrical, plumbing, communication (electrical equipment) and put it to good use. Even though much has been accomplished, there is much more I would like to accomplish if given an opportunity to continue my service on the board. Thank you for your consideration and I hope to continue serving the pool community.

  • Craig Madden
I have enjoyed serving on the CSCSC Board for the last several years working with other dedicated volunteers to improve the facility and to expand on its use by members. I feel we have accomplished a lot in the last few years and that I have been an integral part of making the pool a happy place. There are still many improvements we can make and so I would like to continue to serve on the CSCSC Board and work towards continued improvement.

July

From the Vice President

We are well into the Summer Season at Cape Pool. As some of you have already witnessed, seating can be limited, especially on the weekends. Please, if you are using a lounge chair just for your stuff, try using one of the chairs lined up along the fence and leave seating for those who wish to sun themselves.

Some comments have been made about the guards being too strict. The guards are there to keep the pool safe and when they see a potentially dangerous situation, they have been instructed to put an end to it. One example is hand stands in the low end...they are allowed, but not when the pool is crowded and a foot in the face is likely to happen. Please use good judgment when playing in the pool. Also, diving into the diving well from the pool's edge is allowed, but not when there are numerous bodies in that area.

The Pool Rules are posted on the website. It would be a good idea to remind family members of them and when bringing guests to inform them so the guards can stay focused on keeping everyone safe instead of reminding people of the rules. Also, please remember that the guards are there to guard the pool, not babysit kids. That is still the parent's responsibility.

All guests must be signed in and paid for via the guest card system. If there is no guard at the guard table when entering, please go back when there is one to take care of the guest fees. (A heads up to family members who bring guests would be appreciated.)

Feedback forms are located at the entrance to the pool. If you have comments or concerns please leave a form in the black mailbox just outside the entryway. We love to hear from you and if there is anything that needs correcting we need to know about it...or if there is something you are especially pleased with, we love to hear about that too.

Two late nights have been planned this season. Mark your calendars and stay till 11 P.M. on Saturday July 7 and Saturday August 4.

Enjoy the Summer,

Pia Wingblade

Hey everyone! We have some fun events coming up at the pool this summer – here’s what’s happening……

In June, the 5th graders from CSC Elementary will be having their graduation pool party on June 8th, 1-4 pm. The pool is not closed to members, but just a heads up that the pool will be busy! If your 5th grade child is coming, please try to complete a swim test BEFORE the party. The guards will be busy testing non-member children who want to swim in the deep end.

Also, June 14th is Kid’s Nite! Drop off your kids, folks, because from 6-8 pm, the pool is open just for children ages 7-12 years old. The price is $4.00 for members, and $7.00 for guests. Kids will get a hot dog, chips, drink and sno cone. All children (members and guests) attending must have passed the swim test BEFORE the party. A sign-up sheet will be at the guard’s table soon. Payment is expected at the time of sign-up.

If you would like to use the pavilion for a party, please fill out a reservation form and drop it in the black mailbox just outside the entrance to the pool. Look on the pool’s web site under “Parties” for information about using the pavilion, and under “Forms” for the printable reservation form and guest list form. There are also reservation forms available in one of the clear, plastic boxes hanging on the fence just outside the entrance to the pool. We will be posting times that the pavilion is already in use on the calendar on the web site.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for Movie Night on Saturday, July 14th. The movie is to be determined; more information to come!

You can buy a guest card at the pool. Each card is good for 7 guests and costs $21. If you would like to buy a guest card, please bring a check for $21 - no cash - and see a lifeguard. Swim Team Preview

This program is designed for young future Dolphin swimmers who are not quite ready for team but are curious about it and are thinking of joining next season.

This team is for the 6-year-old (as of June 1, 2012) who can swim 25 yards, unaided, without stopping or grabbing the side of the pool.

During the two week course the swimmer will increase his or her proficiency and overall skill level. By the end of the course, your swimmer may increase his or her confidence to such a degree that he/she may wish to join the competitive team next year.

This is not a substitute for swim lessons but is meant to give a child who is thinking of joining the team next year a chance to improve their stamina and stroke skills and have the experience of swimming in a team practice environment.

All swimmers registering for Swim Team Preview must be able to swim one length of the pool unaided or have a recommendation from one of our coaches or lessons instructors. Swimmers who cannot meet the minimum requirement should register for Swim Lessons.

Cost: $40 for Members of CSCSC. $50 for non-members of CSCSC

Five days of instruction in a swim team setting. Swimmers will practice alongside the team in a separate lane with their own coach. Included in the fee is AAU membership.

M-F from 9:30 am to 10:00 am July 9 through July 13 (no make-up days)

Access Through the Side Gate

We started off the year with the side access gate to the pool from the parking lot locked. This was due to break-ins during the spring, particularly during our some spring cleaning sessions. Several members asked if the gate could be unlocked during pool and swim team hours, so that kids could safely access the pool. As a result, we've decided to reopen the side access gate.

Networking at the Pool

We brought back the free wifi service at the pool that we started last year! But this year, we made it even easier to get online. Just turn on your wifi on your device and look for 'CapePool'. Click on it and you are ready to go...no password needed!

We also started a Facebook page for the pool. You can find it www.facebook.com/CapePool. You don't have to join Facebook to see the site; we have the postings replicated on the Cape Pool webpage as well.

Mark Your Calendar!

Friday, June 8 – 5th Grade Pool Party (1-4 pm). The pool is open to members, but be ready for plenty of additional company!
Thursday, June 14 – Kid's Nite (6-8 pm). The pool is open just for kids ages 7-12
Saturday, July 14 – Movie Nite. Details TBA.

May

From the President

Opening day is just a couple of weeks away and I know we are all looking forward to getting in the pool! Please consider coming down to volunteer for Clean Up Day on Sat May 12th. Without volunteers, the pool would never be ready to open.

Staff are currently hard at work re-plastering the pools and we are looking forward to the finished product. We have also made some electrical upgrades that should help us avoid shorting out fuses and include fans for up in the pavilion.

Have a great summer, have fun and enjoy the Cape Pool.

Feel free to email me at president@capepool.com with anything that's on your mind concerning the pool or staff.

Kristie Alva

Clean Up Day

We still need your help! Please consider joining us for Clean-Up Day on Saturday 12th from 9 am - ??? (rain date May 19th). Pitching in on pool beautification helps to keep our dues costs down and helps to make our environment as lovely and enjoyable as possible. Each family that volunteers gets a guest card (good for 7 free guests). If you are attending Clean Up Day and have items that we can use (rakes, brooms, POWER WASHERS, etc), please bring them! Thanks!

From the Vice President

Just a few more weeks...and the pool will be OPEN!!! Please check the cape pool website for an updated version of the rules and let your family members share in them. It is especially helpful to remember the rules for guests and the guidelines for children hosting. Although we will keep your guest card on file for you, we are not responsible for it...and if your kids like to invite without parental permission, it may be safer for you to hold on to the card. (Just a little FYI).

In an effort to make the pool a safer place, we have instituted a new set of guidelines for the diving well:
  • When there is an orange cone in place, the diving well will be closed to divers. Kids playing games in the diving well will be given at least 10 minutes to finish their game before the diving board will be opened again.
  • When the diving board is open, there will be no one allowed in the diving well or along the walls, other than the person who just dove in.
  • Please show cooperation for this new set of guidelines. If you (or your child) wishes to use the diving board when it is closed, please signal to the closest guard that you would like to dive. The kids in the diving well will be given notice and time to come to a finish.
We ask for your cooperation during the first few weeks of the season. This is a hectic time with new guards (just learning our system), a ton of swim tests, and members picking up passes. Things can get a little backed up. Please be sure to sign in each family member and be sure to notify the guard of any guests. Remember, you can only pay for guests with the guest card purchased by check for $21 (7 visits) CASH IS NOT ACCEPTED.

Have a safe and happy summer,

Pia Wingblade

Volleyball

For 2012, we will be changing our adult volleyball to Tuesday nights. It's always a great time, so come out and play!

Swim Team

Swim Team has completed registration with 102 swimmers. 70% of the team is made up of club members. Team practice begins Tuesday May 29. Practices will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday through Friday through June 8. Morning practices will begin on June 11. Home meets will be on June 16 and June 23 – pool will open for swimming at 1 p.m. but spectators are welcome at the meet. Come out and cheer for the CSC Dolphins! Enjoy our Dolphin Café – we have Sno-Cones and the best taco-in-a-bag in the league!

Swim Lessons

Registration for Swim Lessons is being accepted on-line at www.capepool.com, just use the link on the swim lessons page.

• Ability Evaluation 1: Friday, June 15 at 10:00 am
Session A: June 18 – June 21
Session B: June 25 – June 28
• Ability Evaluation 2: Friday, June 29 at 10:00 am
Session C: July 2 – July 5
Session D: July 9 – July 12
Session E: July 16 – July 19

Water Aerobics and Morning Lap Swim

Water Aerobics will be on Monday and Wednesdays this season from 5:45 – 6:45. We will start on June 11th and will finish July 30th. Our new water aerobics instructor will be Tara Witten- you can find out about Tara and her approach to water aerobics on the water aerobics page at www.capepool.com.

Morning Adult Lap Swim will be on Tuesday and Thursdays mornings from 7:00 – 7:45, beginning June 12 and ending July 19th. Please sign in upon arrival.

Social Events

Hey Everyone! Summer is just around the corner, and as usual, we’ll have fun events at the pool for our members and guests. Kid’s Nite will kick us off in June. Other favorites will be Movie Night and Margarita Happy Hour. Watch for signs at the pool, look at the calendar of events on the swim club’s web page, and read your Waterlog to be up to date on all that’s happening. See you at the pool!

Membership & Guest Cards

You can pick up your membership cards once the pool opens. Each family member has his or her own card, and if you orderd a babysitter or guest card, these cards will be waiting for you at the pool as well. Please keep in mind that there's a $10 fee if you lose your membership card and need a new one.

Once the pool opens, you can purchase a guest card if you did not do so during the registration process. They are $21 and are good for 7 guests - but not all on one day. (Pool rules limit you to 5 guests a day unless you scheduled a party.) If you want to buy a guest card, please give one of the lifeguards a $21 check payable to CSCSC Inc. No cash, please.

It's not too late to get a babysitter card for the season. Babysitter cards are $50 for the season. For your sitter to use the card, s/he must be at least 13 years old. If you would like a babysitter card, please email membership@capepool.com.

President's Welcome

With all of this warm weather, I think that we are all getting excited for the pool to open. Opening weekend is not far away ... Saturday, May 26th is fast approaching. I am pleased to announce that we will have High Sierra once again managing the pool this summer. They have done a fantastic job the last two years and we are looking forward to another great year!

Once again, dues were available to be paid through our online system and this has made the process streamlined and easier for everyone.

We have done some work over the winter with our fencing, both around the parking lot edge and around the baby pool. I think that everyone will like the new look that the baby pool has. We will also be re-plastering both the main pool and baby pool before the pool opens.

We still need your help! Please consider joining us on our Clean-Up day in early May (we're still finalizing the date...watch your email for updates!) Pitching in on pool beautification helps to keep our dues costs down and helps to make our environment as lovely and enjoyable as possible. Each family that volunteers gets a guest card (good for 7 free guests).

Check our website calendar to keep informed on Swim Team, Volleyball, and Social events this year!

As your President, and on behalf of the board, I just want to say how excited I am that summer is almost here, which means warmer weather and fun days at the pool. If there's anything we can do to improve your experience with us, please let me know.

Kristie Alva

From the Vice President

Spring is in the air and summer is almost here:) In preparation for the upcoming swim season, please consider becoming a lifeguard (kids 16+). You can apply with our management company through their website (www.highsierrapools.com). Please feel free to pass this information along to anyone who may be interested in applying to work at Cape Pool. Also, send me an email (vp@capepool.com) with your name so I can pass it along to the Human Resources manager.

In an effort to make the pool a safer place, we have instituted a new set of guidelines for the diving well.
I look forward to another fun season at Cape Pool.

Pia Wingblade

Swim Team

We want you to be a Cape Dolphin this swim season! Returning swimmers and current Club members can now register for the upcoming swim season. After April 15th, registration will be open to the public and spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Visit the swim team webpage to register for the upcoming swim season and get the tentative practice and 2012 meet schedules.

Swim Lessons

If your child or children are not quite ready to be a Cape Dolphin, sign up for swim lessons. There are 5 four-day sessions (Monday – Thursday), and each lesson is 30 minutes. Swimmers are grouped by ability, so your child or children must attend one of the ability evaluation sessions (June 15th or 29th).
